Wisdom Teeth Pain: Causes, Relief, and When to See a Dentist
If you’re dealing with pain at the back of your mouth, you’re not alone — wisdom tooth pain is one of the most common reasons patients across Preston, Thornbury, Northcote, Coburg, and Reservoir book in with our team. Here’s what’s likely causing it, what you can do in the meantime, and when it’s time to get it properly assessed.
Why Do Wisdom Teeth Hurt?
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are usually the last teeth to come through, typically between your late teens and mid-twenties. Most jaws simply don’t have enough room for them, which is why they so often cause problems. Common causes of wisdom tooth pain include:
- Impaction — the tooth doesn’t have enough space to erupt properly and becomes trapped in the gum or jawbone.
- Partial eruption — the tooth only partly breaks through the gum, creating a flap of tissue where food and bacteria can get trapped, leading to infection and swelling.
- Crowding and pressure — the wisdom tooth pushes against neighbouring teeth as it tries to come through, causing pressure and discomfort.
- Decay or gum disease — wisdom teeth sit at the very back of the mouth, making them genuinely difficult to clean properly, which increases the risk of cavities and gum infection around them.
- Cysts — in some cases, fluid-filled sacs can form around an impacted wisdom tooth, which may affect surrounding bone and teeth if left untreated.
What Does Wisdom Teeth Pain Feel Like?
Pain from wisdom teeth can show up in a few different ways, and it doesn’t always stay confined to the back of your mouth. Common symptoms include:
- A dull ache or sharp pain at the back of the jaw
- Swelling or tenderness in the gums
- Jaw stiffness or difficulty opening your mouth fully
- Pain that radiates toward the ear or across the jaw
- An unpleasant taste or odour, which can indicate infection
- Headaches, particularly if there’s ongoing jaw tension
Can You Get Temporary Relief at Home?
While home care isn’t a substitute for a proper assessment, a few things can help manage discomfort in the short term: rinsing gently with warm salt water, taking over-the-counter pain relief as directed, and avoiding hard or chewy foods on the affected side. If you notice swelling, fever, or pain that’s getting worse rather than better, this points toward infection and shouldn’t wait — book in with a dentist as soon as possible rather than continuing to manage it at home.
Getting It Properly Assessed
The only way to know exactly what’s happening with a wisdom tooth — and whether it needs to come out — is with a proper clinical exam and imaging. For cases that need a closer look, we also offer on-site CBCT (Cone Beam CT) scanning, which gives a detailed 3D view of the tooth’s position relative to nerves, sinuses, and surrounding bone. This level of detail helps us plan accurately for straightforward extractions and more complex impacted cases alike, rather than relying on a flat 2D image alone.
The most cost-effective way to start is our $295 New Patient Exam & Clean, which includes a comprehensive exam, X-rays (including an OPG panoramic X-ray), a full hygiene clean, and fluoride — normally valued at over $475. If you’d prefer a more limited starting point, a consultation and X-ray only is also available — we’ll talk you through which option makes sense based on what you’re experiencing.
How Much Does Wisdom Teeth Removal Cost?
At The Smile Designer, wisdom tooth extractions start from $300 per tooth, up to $750 per tooth depending on the complexity of the extraction — for example, whether the tooth is fully erupted, partially erupted, or impacted. We also offer in-house sedation facilities for patients who would prefer to be more relaxed during their procedure. Your exact cost and whether sedation is suitable for you will be confirmed after your exam and imaging, so you know what to expect before you go ahead.
When Is Removal Necessary?
Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. Some erupt fully, sit in a healthy position, and cause no ongoing problems. Removal is generally recommended when a tooth is impacted, causing recurring pain or infection, contributing to crowding, or affecting the health of neighbouring teeth. Our team will only recommend extraction where it’s clinically appropriate for your situation, based on what we see in your exam and imaging.
