What to Expect When Getting Dental Implants
Getting dental implants can feel daunting if you’re unsure about the process. To help you understand what to expect, we’ve outlined the key steps and considerations involved in dental implant treatment.
Dental implants are the gold standard for replacing missing teeth. They function like natural teeth, preserve jawbone integrity, and provide a long-lasting solution when cared for properly. The difference between a dental implant and a natural tooth is often barely noticeable, and implants are designed to last for many years.
Initial Consultation and Assessment
Your journey begins with a consultation at The Smile Designer Dental Studio, where you and your dentist will discuss your treatment goals, oral health, options, pricing, and payment plans. This appointment also allows your dentist to examine your teeth, gums, and jawbone to determine if there’s sufficient bone to support an implant.
We use advanced 3D imaging technology to plan the precise placement of your implant. This not only improves accuracy but also maximizes the likelihood of long-term success. Studies show that properly placed dental implants have a success rate of around 90%, though the attached crown may require occasional maintenance over time.
Before proceeding, signed consent is required to ensure mutual agreement between patient and dentist regarding the treatment plan.
Preparing for Your Dental Implant
Each patient’s treatment timeline can vary depending on oral health and individual needs. Some patients may require:
- Tooth extractions
- Bone grafting
- Sinus lifts
Bone grafting and sinus lifts are necessary when there is insufficient bone to anchor the implant. Bone naturally deteriorates over time when a tooth is missing, and patients with longstanding gum disease may need additional grafting to ensure implant stability.
The Dental Implant Procedure
The dental implant process typically involves the following steps:
- Preparation of the implant site:
The area is numbed, and a small incision is made in the gum to expose the underlying bone. The socket is prepared for the implant. - Implant placement:
The titanium implant is inserted into the prepared socket, and the gum tissue is sutured back in place. The implant then undergoes a 4–6 month healing period, during which the bone fuses with the implant in a process called osseointegration. - Abutment placement:
After the healing period, the gum is reopened to expose the implant. An abutment—a small connector— is attached to the implant, and the gum tissue is allowed to heal for 2–4 weeks. - Crown attachment:
Impressions of your teeth are taken to create a custom crown that matches the size and color of your natural teeth. The crown is then secured to the abutment, either by cementation or by screwing it in place.
Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants restore not just the appearance of your smile but also functionality:
- Chewing and biting: Enjoy your favourite foods again without discomfort.
- Jawbone preservation: Implants help prevent bone loss and maintain facial structure.
Although dental implants may seem like a significant investment, their long-term benefits for your oral health make them a worthwhile choice.
