Dental Check-Up and Teeth Cleaning Melbourne

What’s Included in a Check-Up and Clean?

In addition to twice-daily brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash at home, a regular dental checkup and professional teeth cleaning are the best ways to maintain good oral health.

Here’s what you can expect during your appointment at our Melbourne dental clinic.

Comprehensive Dental Examination

Our expert dentist will assess your teeth, gums, tongue, and mouth for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, oral cancers, or other dental problems.

They will also check any existing dental work, such as fillings, crowns or dental implants, to ensure that everything is functioning as it should and isn’t contributing to ailments such as bad breath or other discomfort.

Professional Teeth Cleaning

During deep teeth cleaning, our oral health therapists or dentists will gently remove any plaque, tartar build-up, and surface stains that may have built up.

Doing this helps to prevent the risk of gum inflammation and support healthier gums. Towards the end of the cleaning, they will also polish the tooth surface to smooth it, which will make it harder for bacteria and stains to stick between dental visits.

If any of the stains are stubborn, they can advise on the best teeth whitening solution.

Dental X-rays (if required)

In some cases, we may recommend low-radiation X-rays, as this helps us to check for issues beneath the gums or between teeth.

This technology can detect early signs of decay, bone loss, or impacted tooth roots that may not be visible during the visual exam. It can provide early detection, which will avoid the need for more complex dental treatments later down the line.

Fluoride Treatment for Added Protection

After your teeth cleaning, we may apply a concentrated fluoride gel or varnish to your teeth. This will strengthen the enamel of your teeth and help reduce any tooth sensitivity.

Fluoride treatment can be especially beneficial if you’re prone to decay, have deep grooves in your teeth, or simply want extra protection between regular cleaning appointments.

Why Regular Dental Cleaning is Important

professional teeth cleaning melbourne

Routine dental checkups and professional cleaning are essential not just for a beautiful smile but for your overall health. They help protect against common dental problems while promoting your long-term oral wellness.

Preventing Tooth Decay & Periodontal Disease

Regular teeth cleaning removes tartar buildup and plaque from hard-to-reach areas, which reduces your risk of cavities and advanced gum disease.

Even with excellent brushing and flossing habits, harmful bacteria can accumulate below the gums. Therefore, a professional clean every six months will help to maintain good oral hygiene and keep your gums healthy and strong.

Early Detection of Oral Health Issues

Routine dental visits allow our experienced dentists to spot early signs of dental concerns such as sensitive teeth, enamel wear, gum inflammation, or oral cancers.

The earlier the diagnosis, the less need for invasive treatment and lower costs. It’s also a key step in protecting your overall health from systemic diseases linked to poor oral care.

Deep Cleaning vs. Routine Cleaning

Depending on the condition of your gums and the presence of plaque below the gumline, your dentist will recommend either a routine or deep cleaning.

Routine Cleaning (Prophylaxis)

This is your standard checkup and cleaning and is designed for patients who have generally good oral health. It removes plaque, surface stains, and tartar from above the gums.

Regular cleaning, especially when combined with daily brushing, flossing, and dietary advice from your dental team, helps prevent gum disease and supports a healthy smile.

Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing)

If you have signs of advanced gum disease, your dentist may recommend deep cleaning. This involves removing plaque and tartar from beneath the gum line and smoothing the tooth roots to encourage gum reattachment.

Root planing helps manage your gum health and reduces the risk of inflammation. It can also potentially prevent tooth loss or further dentistry treatment.

How Often Should You Book a Dental Check-Up and Clean?

dental check up and clean Melbourne

Most Australians benefit from a dental check-up, cleaning, and other similar services every six months to maintain optimal oral health.

However, if you have a history of periodontal disease, tartar build-up, or other dental issues, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits.

Benefits of Regular Dental Check-Ups

Booking regular dental check-ups will help you to maintain healthier gums by preventing the build-up of plaque and tartar, which reduces your risk of gum disease. You’ll also enjoy fresher breath, as professional cleaning removes bacteria that brushing alone can’t reach.

However, perhaps most importantly, early detection of issues like decaying teeth, enamel erosion, or gum inflammation can significantly reduce long-term dental costs by avoiding the need for complex treatments.

Tips for Maintaining Oral Health Between Visits

Keeping your teeth and gums in top condition between dental visits is vital to preventing problems like tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.

In this respect, your daily habits make a real difference to your overall oral health. Here’s what you can do to make it better.

Brushing & Flossing Techniques

Brush your teeth twice a day using gentle circular motions and fluoride toothpaste. Don’t forget the gum line and back molars.

In addition, you should floss once a day to remove plaque and food particles between teeth. Be careful when doing this, as snapping floss can damage the gum. So, use a gentle sawing motion to clean without causing irritation or bleeding.

Recommended Oral Hygiene Products

We recommend using a soft-bristled electric toothbrush, and it is also a good idea to look for toothpaste that targets your specific needs, such as sensitivity, enamel strength, or gum care.

In addition, alcohol-free mouthwash can help reduce bacteria without drying your mouth and leave your breath feeling minty fresh!

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a check-up and clean take?

A standard dental checkup and clean usually takes around 40 minutes. However, this will depend on your oral health and whether additional dental services like X-rays or fluoride treatment are required.

Is it painful?

Most patients find a check-up and teeth cleaning to be pain-free. Our experienced dentists and oral health therapists use gentle techniques and the latest technology to keep you comfortable.

That said, if you have gum inflammation, tooth erosion, or deeper dental issues, you may feel slight sensitivity, but this is usually short-lived. We also offer numbing options when needed.

Do I need an X-ray every time?

Not necessarily. Dental X-rays are used to spot hidden issues like tooth decay between teeth, problems with tooth roots, or signs of bone loss.

If you maintain good oral hygiene and have no current dental issues, we may only recommend X-rays every two years.

How often should I come in?

We recommend regular dental check-ups and professional teeth cleaning every six months to help you maintain optimal oral health.

However, if you’re managing gum disease, have a history of dentistry treatments such as dental implants or root canal therapy, or are a pregnant woman, more regular visits may be needed to keep your teeth’s health on track.

Can I claim this on my health insurance?

Yes, most private health insurance policies with extras cover general dentistry services, including check-ups, gum cleaning, and teeth cleaning.

This can help you save money on routine dental visits. But be sure to check your provider’s terms because gap payments may still apply.
