Composite Veneers Melbourne

What Are Composite Veneers?

Composite veneers, a form of dental restoration, are commonly used in Melbourne to improve the look of teeth, especially for concerns like discoloration, minor chips, or slight misalignment. They offer a less invasive option compared to traditional porcelain veneers and are often completed in a single visit.

Composite Veneers are constructed with a tooth-coloured resin, the same material that is used for white fillings. They are handcrafted and bonded onto your existing teeth.

Our Dentists at The Smile Designer take pride and have excellent attention to detail as well as having a conservative approach. They can help you decide between composite or porcelain veneers. Our goal is to help design and achieve the smile you want with minimally invasive treatment options whilst achieving the best possible outcome.

What is Composite Bonding?

Composite bonding, sometimes referred to as tooth bonding, is a cosmetic dentistry technique.

This process involves the application of bonding material onto the surface of the tooth. The composite resin used can be shaped, polished and coloured to blend in with the surrounding teeth.

It’s a procedure that only takes one appointment with your dentist. The tooth can be prepared, the composite materials applied and shaped, then hardened with a special light which cures the resin so that it permanently bonds to the tooth.

Both composite bonding and composite veneers are cosmetic dental procedures used to change the appearance of teeth, but there are key differences between them which patients should be aware of.

Composite bonding refers to the direct application of a tooth-coloured material to your existing teeth, in order to repair chips or cracks. This is an economical option for individuals looking for quick fixes.

Composite veneers involve the application of thin shells over existing teeth; this choice can change the shape, size and overall look of one’s smile. Both options usually take only one appointment to complete, though multiple appointments may be necessary depending on the complexity and scope of work desired by the patient.

Composite veneers- your simple guide

Composite Veneers Process

Checking if you are the right candidate:

This depends on the amount of tooth structure that needs to be changed or replaced. If your dental health is more serious, then more advanced dentistry may be required.

For successful bonding, we need to ensure there is no tooth decay and teeth and gums are healthy to ensure there will be no limitation to the success of the bonding.

Come in for your Check up & Clean appointment. All records will be taken and we can discuss options in more detail. Alternatively, we offer Smile Makeover Consultations, where our dentists will go through your options and estimated costs. A New Patient exam will ideally still be required prior to starting your cosmetic journey.

Selecting shade:

Selecting the right shade is essential. For the best results, our dentist may require you to get your Teeth whitened as this will allow for a more harmonious finish for when you maintain your teeth whitening.

Your dentist will pick the right shade to ensure the composite veneers fit in well with the rest of your teeth. The dentist will work with you here and ensure that you pick the shade and are happy with it before deciding and confirming the shade.

Digital Smile Design

Depending on the complexity of the case, a digital smile design is created to help achieve the ideal shape of your new composite veneers.

An injection moulding technique is sometimes used as well. Costs for this stage will be discussed at your initial appointment.

Preparation of your Teeth

The tooth surface at this appointment is carefully prepared by cleaning and abrading the surface; this technique makes the surface a bit rougher so that the bonding material adheres well to the surface of your teeth.

A conditioning adhesive liquid is then applied before the resin is sculpted and moulded into its correct shape. Finally, you will see an ultraviolent blue light used over the resin; this helps solidify the material.

The composite is then polished and trimmed to give you the desired smile. It is also important to note that tea, coffee, cigarettes, wine, and other staining substances can easily stain resin material.

So, it is highly recommended that you avoid such foods and drinks that can cause staining for the first 48 hours after the procedure

Wearing your Night Splint

In most cases, a night splint will be recommended to protect your new composite veneers or bonding to help reduce fractures.

Composite Bonding Process

The composite bonding dental process is a procedure used to repair damaged or imperfect teeth. During the process, a white filling material is applied to the tooth surface, where it is moulded and smoothened until it fits snugly. This filling material, a tooth-colored composite resin, closely resembles and blends in with the appearance of your real teeth.

The resin is then hardened with a special curing light in order to achieve full strength and durability. Afterward, if necessary, the trimming and polishing of your new restoration is done by the dentist in order to ensure that your smile looks natural.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does composite bonding last?

Composite bonding is a popular and effective cosmetic solution for teeth that have been chipped, cracked, discoloured, or have gaps. It involves using tooth-colored resin material to fill in imperfections in the teeth, giving them a more even appearance.

With proper care and routine maintenance, composite bonding can typically be expected to last for a few years before needing to be touched up or reapplied. Although during that time, chips and breaks can happen which will then need to be repaired, and this will need to be budgeted for.

That said, avoiding activities such as chewing ice or hard sweets can help extend the life of your composite bonding even further.

Is it worth getting composite bonding?

Composite bonding can be great to conceal any cracks or chips in teeth.

The composite resin used during this procedure is also durable enough to last many years as long as it is well-maintained with regular check-ups and good oral hygiene habits, together with using a night splint to reduce force on the teeth. Not only is the material tooth-coloured, but it also allows for corrections if there are any areas of concern.

Does composite bonding damage your teeth?

While composite bonding can improve a smile with minimal damage to natural enamel, it is important to remember that due to its nature, it does have limited lifespan so regular maintenance care is necessary. Minimally invasive procedures are also case specific.

It’s important to visit an experienced dentist for the application process as many procedural factors such as technique and skill significantly impact composite bonding success.

Therefore, proper selection of a reputable practitioner can help ensure long lasting results while keeping your teeth in good condition over time.

Is composite bonding better than veneers?

Composite bonding is an increasingly popular choice for cosmetic dentistry, due to its cost-effectiveness and quick turnaround time. This method of restoration is performed directly in the dentist’s office, making it a great choice when time or budget are of utmost importance.

With this technique, a tooth colored resin is applied to the surface of the teeth. Veneers may offer a longer-term solution for those hoping for a more permanent aesthetic enhancement, but composite bonding can be just as effective.

Ultimately, the decision between composite bonding and veneers should be made in conversation between patient and dental provider, taking into consideration several factors such as price range and desired outcome.
