Dental Crowns in Preston

A dental crown is a custom-made cap placed over a tooth to protect, strengthen, and restore its shape. We offer both traditional lab-made crowns and same-day crowns using our in-house CEREC milling unit, for patients across Preston, Thornbury, Northcote, Coburg, and Reservoir.

Types of Dental Crowns

Porcelain

Matched to the colour of your existing teeth — a popular option for visible teeth.

Metal

Made from metals such as gold or silver — durable and long-lasting.

Ceramic

A type of dental porcelain that’s both strong and aesthetically pleasing.

Zirconia

A strong, durable ceramic material that’s resistant to chipping and cracking.

Composite Resin

A tooth-coloured composite resin material bonded directly to the tooth.

The right type for you depends on the location of the tooth, your personal preferences, and your budget — we’ll help you choose at your consultation.

The Procedure

Traditional vs. Same-Day Crowns

Traditional Lab-Made Crown

Involves two visits. At your first visit, we examine your mouth, take X-rays and digital images, reshape the tooth if needed, and fit a temporary crown while your custom crown is made — typically 2–3 weeks at our dental lab. At your second visit, we remove the temporary and cement your permanent crown into place.

Same-Day CEREC Crown

Using our in-house CEREC milling unit, we can design, mill, and fit your crown in a single visit for many cases — no temporary crown, no second appointment. We’ll let you know if you’re a suitable candidate for this option.

FAQs

Dental Crowns Questions, Answered

How much is a dental crown?
Generally, the cost of a dental crown ranges from $1,900 to $2,500, depending on individual circumstance and the type of crown chosen.
When do you need a dental crown?
A dental crown could be needed to protect a weak tooth from decay, hold together parts of a cracked tooth, or restore a tooth that has already broken. Crowns are also suitable as a cosmetic option, to mend fractured fillings, or after a root canal procedure.
How is a dental crown done?
There are two main steps: getting your crown customised (either in our lab over 2-3 weeks, or same-day using our in-house CEREC milling unit), then cementing it in once you’re happy with the fit, shape, and colour.
Which dental crown is best?
Porcelain or ceramic crowns are the most popular choice for a natural look, matching your existing teeth in shape, size, and colour without any metal components.
How long does a dental crown last?
On average, dental crowns last 5 to 15 years, depending on wear and tear and how well you maintain your oral hygiene.
Can I get a same-day crown?
In many cases, yes, using our in-house CEREC milling unit. We’ll let you know at your consultation whether your case is suitable for a same-day crown.
